NEW DELHI: In a bid to crack down on the “broken” migration system in Australia, the government announced tightening the visa rules for international students and low-skilled workers on Monday.
The government came up with a 10-year migration strategy that includes Australia’s current migration numbers and how it proposes to curb them, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported.
As per the new stricter rules, international students would need to secure higher ratings on English tests, and there would be more scrutiny on a student’s second visa application that would prolong their stay.
The government said there are five key objectives for its migration strategy: raising living standards for Australians, ensuring good working conditions, and strengthening international relationships.
Under these new rules, the government is ready to come up with new visas, the skills in demand visa that will replace the existing temporary skill shortage visa.
The federal government is set to unveil a major new migration strategy that aims to dramatically cut Australia’s intake after a surge of arrivals after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Australian government intended to uplift the language standard for international students and education providers.
There will be higher English language requirements for students wanting to study in Australia, which the government says will look to “improve the quality of students’ educational experience in Australia and reduce potential workplace exploitation”.
The Australian government said that without the new policies, the migration level would remain higher for longer, as per ABC.
Regarding the new rules, Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said that the changes to the migration system announced and implemented earlier this year are already putting “downward pressure” on net migration.
